Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft since 2014, is working to reposition the software giant at the heart of the artificial intelligence revolution. Despite a market cap approaching $4 trillion, Microsoft has failed to establish itself as an AI leader, with Nvidia dominating chips, Anthropic and OpenAI possessing the most advanced models, and Google attracting businesses and consumers with Gemini. The company is betting on consumption-based billing to replace traditional subscriptions: GitHub Copilot now has 50 million users and Microsoft has 30 million Copilot seats across a commercial Office 365 base exceeding 450 million users. In 2024, Nadella hired Mustafa Suleyman, former cofounder of DeepMind acquired by Google in 2014, to lead AI initiatives, while the stock price has risen only 7% this year, lagging megacap peers and the Nasdaq.
