Approximately 9.5 million borrowers are in default on their student loans, with nearly 1 in 4 at risk of having their wages or Social Security checks seized. The Trump administration has paused involuntary collections, but Sanders seeks to codify this protection into law. About 9.6 million student loan borrowers are age 50 or older, holding nearly $457 billion in outstanding loans.
