Russian Influence Network Used ChatGPT to Masquerade as Academic Experts

OpenAI banned accounts linked to a Russian influence network that used ChatGPT to promote a fake institute presented as Israeli, the International Burke Institute. The operation, conducted via VPNs to circumvent ChatGPT restrictions in Russia, involved publishing copied articles on academic websites, often wrongly attributed to real researchers. Of the 36 articles examined on the institute’s website, 34 were plagiarized, and associated Telegram channels had up to 20,000 subscribers each. OpenAI also identified related operations involving the Forest Blizzard group, tied to Russian military intelligence, which used the chatbot for target research and phishing attacks.
