Ro Khanna, a California Democrat, has publicly supported the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act, introduced on September 23 by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Greg Casar. This bill proposes banning recursive self-improving AI systems capable of enhancing their own capabilities without human intervention, with penalties of up to 20 years in prison and what is being called a corporate death penalty. Khanna is also advocating for the creation of a federal AI Safety Agency modeled after the FDA to oversee frontier AI development. He has called for binding international agreements with China on AI safety and urged US labs like Anthropic as well as Chinese firms like DeepSeek and Alibaba to adopt stricter commitments. As of late September 2026, Khanna had not yet introduced standalone legislation on this matter.
