River Plate has reached a verbal agreement with Atlético Madrid for the signing of Thiago Almada for 20 million euros, corresponding to the acquisition of 50 percent of the player’s registration rights. Atlético Madrid was initially seeking 17 million euros for the same share, but River Plate agreed to pay a premium to fend off competition, notably from Brazilian club Flamengo. The 25-year-old Argentinian attacking midfielder, part of the 2022 World Cup-winning squad, has agreed to personal terms with River Plate. The transfer is expected to be formally announced after the 2026 World Cup concludes. Almada joined Atlético Madrid in July 2025 following a stint at Botafogo and a loan spell at Lyon.
