Scammers Pose as EU Regulators to Prey on MiCA Deadline Fallout

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) warned about fraudulent use of its logo and identity in fake documents promoting scams, following the July 1 deadline for MiCA registration. Out of more than 1,700 unlicensed firms forced to cease operations in the European Union, only 323 obtained a MiCA license. National regulators like France’s AMF reported cases where scammers impersonated their staff to redirect clients to fake websites. According to Chainalysis, losses from crypto scams and fraud reached $17 billion in 2023, compared to $6 billion in 2020.
