At this facility, workers cut book spines to feed pages into a scanner faster, destroying the books in the process. Amazon, Anthropic and other companies are buying physical books in bulk, particularly those published before 2022, to train their AI models because these texts are not readily available online and are not machine-generated. Anthropic agreed to pay $1.5 billion to settle a dispute over the scanning of pirated titles.
