Rangers FC have signed South African defender Olwethu Makhanya, 22, from MLS side Philadelphia Union for an estimated $4.5 million (approximately £3 to £5 million). Both clubs involved in this transfer have invested in blockchain-powered fan engagement: Rangers through a partnership with Bitci launched in July 2021, and Philadelphia Union through a multi-year deal with Theta Labs in 2025 for AI-powered fan tools. Philadelphia Union also maintains a fan loyalty partnership with Socios.com and its CHZ token ecosystem since 2022. Under manager Derek McInnes, Rangers are undergoing a significant squad overhaul, and Makhanya could become the fifth South African to play for the club.
