Powerful quake hits southern Japan, deaths feared in shopping mall explosion

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s Kumamoto prefecture, triggering explosions and fires at an Aeon shopping mall where several people are feared dead. Around 300,000 people have been ordered to evacuate and 3,600 soldiers deployed to assist with rescue operations as aftershocks continued. At least 50 injuries were reported at one hospital and several people were injured aboard a high-speed train. Approximately 48,000 homes lost power, bullet train services were suspended and Kumamoto airport was closed. TSMC, Sony and Fujifilm evacuated their workers as a precaution.
