Opera unveils WebAI standard to run AI models locally in the browser

Share

Opera introduced WebAI, a web standard that allows artificial intelligence models to run directly in the browser without relying on remote servers. This initial preview, launched on October 27, 2026 in Opera One, targets 64-bit Windows computers and Macs with Apple silicon. The standard is model-agnostic and supports Google Gemma as well as Apple’s on-device model on compatible Macs. It can generate text, classify content and identify relationships between data, while reducing cloud costs and keeping data on the user’s device. Support for Opera GX and Opera Neon is planned for later, while Google and Microsoft are backing the initiative.
