OpenAI has detected an Iranian-linked influence operation called Bogus Bylines that created seven fake Western journalists to publish nearly 100 articles critical of the US war against Iran. The operators used ChatGPT to draft long-form articles, editorial pitches, and social media comments. Activity began in July 2025 and continued until October 2026, when OpenAI suspended the associated accounts. The campaign was rated Category 4 on OpenAI’s IO Breakout Scale. OpenAI noted that the operation appeared commercial in nature and that its exact affiliations, including any government links, remained unconfirmed.
