OpenAI is preparing a policy and public relations campaign to launch right after the US midterm elections, in order to adapt to a potentially very different Washington. Among the planned measures is a vocabulary change replacing the term “data centers” with “AI compute campuses.” The company also aims to shape the conversation ahead of the 2028 presidential race. The push builds on several months of positioning, including Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane’s call for mandatory national AI safety rules and the launch of an Election Operations Center in partnership with Democracy Works and the Associated Press. The rebranding notably targets the PORTS-Pike project in Ohio, an approximately 8-gigawatt campus announced with SB Energy and NVIDIA, part of the Stargate infrastructure initiative launched in 2025.
