OpenAI math breakthroughs raise ‘bunker mode’ alarm from Bitcoin researcher Justin Drake

OpenAI’s mathematical breakthroughs have prompted Ethereum researcher Justin Drake to urge large crypto holders to prepare for “bunker mode”. Drake warns that AI could theoretically discover a classical algorithm capable of breaking elliptic-curve cryptography, threatening the security of Bitcoin and Ethereum wallets using ECDSA on secp256k1. Recommended measures include moving assets to addresses with hidden public keys and rotating ECDSA keys for critical infrastructure. No practical attack has been demonstrated, but Drake estimates that in the worst case, such a breakthrough could arrive “in months, not years”. Ethereum’s post-quantum infrastructure is targeted for around 2029, but Drake believes underlying assumptions need to be reassessed in light of AI advances.
