OpenAI CEO Sam Altman admitted in a March 2026 Wired interview that his company fell behind Anthropic in the AI coding tools race. Anthropic’s Claude Code generated nearly $2.5 billion in annualized revenue by February 2026, compared to just over $1 billion for OpenAI’s Codex by late January 2026. OpenAI attempted to acquire Windsurf for approximately $3 billion in 2025, but the deal fell through due to complications with Microsoft, its primary backer and distribution partner. Without the acquisition, OpenAI was left to build its solution organically, including releasing GPT-5.5. By spring 2026, Anthropic had overtaken OpenAI in US enterprise revenue.
