Nscale’s flagship AI supercomputer project in Loughton, Essex, will not come online as planned and may be delayed until the mid-2030s. The 90 MW electricity connection required for the facility is not feasible within the original timeline due to severe congestion on Britain’s power grid. Announced in 2025 as part of the UK government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan, the project was set to host thousands of Nvidia GPUs deployed by Microsoft as the anchor tenant. Over 100 data centre projects across the UK are reportedly considering on-site power generation to avoid grid connections that can stretch beyond a decade. Nscale is evaluating solid-oxide fuel cells from Bloom Energy as an alternative power source and is preparing for a US IPO that could value the company at approximately $3 billion.
