North Korean Hackers Arrested After Laundering State Funds With Crypto

State-trained North Korean hackers were arrested on July 12 for stealing and laundering regime funds through cryptocurrency. The group infiltrated internal networks of North Korea’s Chosun Central Bank and Foreign Trade Bank before being caught during an internal investigation that traced suspicious transactions to a safe house in Pyongyang. Composed of former cyber warfare unit members and graduates from elite North Korean universities, the network used military-grade hacking skills and Chinese equipment to execute the operations. Brokers in China allegedly converted the cryptocurrency into cash, which was then exchanged for fiat currencies by contacts in North Korea’s border regions. The incident is highly ironic given the repeated accusations from the United Nations and the United States regarding state-sponsored cryptocurrency theft operations attributed to Pyongyang.
