Council Speaker Julie Menin cited a recent wave of alarming reports about AI’s potential to cause unparalleled cataclysmic harm as justification for this unprecedented move. Both companies maintain offices and lobbying operations in the city, making it difficult for them to simply decline the invitation. The Council is exploring several regulatory options including disclosure requirements and mandatory safety reporting for AI systems deployed locally.
