National University of Singapore launches world-first data center powered by human brain cells

The National University of Singapore launched on July 16 the world’s first biological server, a rack of 20 computing units containing lab-grown human cortical neurons. This project, developed in collaboration with Australian startup Cortical Labs and Singaporean operator DayOne, targets sustainable artificial intelligence and biomedical research. Each CL1 unit consumes approximately 30 watts compared to over 700 watts for a high-end Nvidia H100 GPU, representing more than a 20-fold difference in power consumption. DayOne, valued at $20 billion, is considering scaling the deployment to 1,000 units, which would bring total consumption to 30 kilowatts. The neurons have an operational lifespan of approximately six months, creating an unprecedented operational model for computing infrastructure.
