Myanmar’s military-backed parliament passed a law on Tuesday introducing the death penalty for anyone using violence or unlawful detention to force others into online scam operations. Life imprisonment is prescribed for running scam centers or committing cryptocurrency fraud. The UNODC estimates scam operations across East Asia, Southeast Asia and Oceania drove 88.3 billion to 114.1 billion dollars in 2025. This bill is the first law passed by the government of Min Aung Hlaing, who led a coup in 2021 and took office as civilian president in April.
