Morgan Stanley’s Ellen Zentner: Women are reshaping the economy. Markets haven’t caught up

Women’s wealth, their ability to accumulate assets, and the wealth transfers they are poised to inherit are reshaping economic power in ways that markets and companies have yet to fully reflect. Cerulli Associates projects that $124 trillion in U.S. wealth will transfer through 2048, including $54 trillion between spouses, with more than 95% going to women. Women’s homeownership rate has risen from roughly 25% to 50% over four decades, while they are the primary household purchasing decision-makers in 72% of homes. Yet startups founded exclusively by women represented only 5.2% of U.S. venture capital deals in 2025 and received just 1.1% of funding. Investors are encouraged to identify companies that understand these shifts in spending, wealth accumulation and financial management, including firms that engage spouses earlier in their advisory relationships.
