More than 15 American politicians have signed a pact supporting a moratorium on new artificial intelligence data center construction. The AI Data Center Moratorium Act, introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, would freeze construction until regulators establish guardrails around safety, energy costs, worker protections, and environmental impact. Approximately 61% of Americans now oppose the construction of new data centers in their communities. In Nebraska, these facilities already account for roughly 11.5% of the state’s total energy use, straining residents’ utility bills and the Ogallala Aquifer. The movement has also gone global, with approximately 40 mayors signing a pact through the C40 Cities initiative in mid-2026.
