Moderna shares surged more than 90% in premarket trading on Wednesday after announcing a successful Phase 3 trial of their personalized mRNA cancer vaccine developed jointly with Merck. The INTerpath-001 trial met its primary endpoint of improving recurrence-free survival as well as a key secondary endpoint of improving distant metastasis-free survival in patients with stage IIB, IIC, III, or IV melanoma. Merck shares rose about 7%. These results represent the first positive Phase 3 trial for an mRNA-based cancer treatment and individualized neoantigen therapy. Previous Phase 2b data had shown a 49% reduction in the risk of recurrence or death and a 59% reduction in the risk of distant spread or death.
