Moderna stock surged over 100% to $122.51 in pre-market trading after the company and Merck reported the first positive Phase 3 result for a personalized mRNA cancer vaccine. The INTerpath-001 trial, involving 1,137 patients with stage IIB to IV melanoma, showed that the vaccine combined with Keytruda kept patients cancer-free longer than Keytruda alone. This marks the first mRNA-based cancer therapy to succeed at Phase 3, following an earlier mid-stage trial that reduced the risk of recurrence or death by 49% at five years. The stock had peaked above $480 in August 2021 before losing over 90% of its value, and has since recovered in 2026, driven partly by a flu vaccine approval.
