Microsoft’s Nadella says AI needs an ’emergency brake’ that humans control

Satya Nadella, chairman and CEO of Microsoft, is calling for advanced AI systems to be built with containment measures, independent controls, and an “emergency brake” allowing authorized individuals to pause or shut down a model mid-task. He advocates treating frontier AI models as insider risks and establishing industry-wide safety standards. His remarks come as Bill Gates, Dario Amodei, Sam Altman, and Elon Musk have raised similar concerns about insufficient AI safety protocols. A researcher quit Anthropic last month accusing the company and its rival OpenAI of “gambling with our lives,” while an Anthropic safety lead estimated a greater than 10% chance AI could annihilate humanity within the next decade.
