Microsoft has launched a voluntary departure and buyout program aimed at around 8,750 US employees, nearly 7% of the 125,000 US workers it counted as of June 2025. Eligibility is based on the “Rule of 70,” which adds an employee’s age to their years of service, with a ceiling at the senior director level. Severance ranges from eight to 39 weeks of base pay, while medical, dental, and vision coverage can continue for up to five years and stock vesting also proceeds. Microsoft estimates the initiative will cost about $900 million as it prepares to invest $190 billion in AI-related development.
