Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft since 2014, views empathy not as a soft skill but as the most difficult competency to develop. This belief was shaped in part by his experience as a father of Zain, his son who passed away in February 2022 at age 26, who had quadriplegia and cerebral palsy. According to LinkedIn research published in 2022, 61% of workers worldwide consider soft skills as important as hard skills. Meanwhile, an Ernst & Young report from 2021 found that nearly 90% of U.S. employees say an empathetic manager increases their job satisfaction, productivity, and loyalty to the company. More than half of respondents said they had left a job because their boss was not empathetic enough about issues at work or in their personal life.
