Mexico considers tougher trade rules for China amid US talks

Share

Mexico is preparing to tighten trade restrictions on certain Chinese products while raising existing tariffs, with rates typically between 20% and 35%, reaching up to 50% for some categories. This customs overhaul affects approximately 1,463 tariff lines, covering 8.6% of Mexico’s import bill, or about $52 billion annually. The bill passed the Senate with overwhelming support (76-5), proposed by President Claudia Sheinbaum in September 2025, in response to Washington pressure over alleged Chinese transshipment through Mexico under USMCA. China has formally challenged these measures, labeling them as trade barriers in March 2026, and additional high-level talks are planned throughout 2026 to de-escalate tensions.
