MetaMask issued an alert on its official X account regarding a security incident affecting part of its staking infrastructure. As a precaution, potentially compromised validators were removed from its operations. Hours earlier, a wallet associated with Ethereum cofounder Joseph Lubin had transferred 356 million dollars in ETH, a coincidence that alarmed some observers. Andy, cofounder of crypto media outlet The Rollup, stated that the situation closely resembled the Kiln hack in 2024, which involved its Solana staking module and led to a 40 million dollar theft on SwissBorg. However, Andy remained reassuring: MetaMask’s liquid staking operations are non-custodial, no user funds would be at risk, and no contagion effect on ETH liquid staking, restaking, or DeFi in general is expected.
