According to the McKinsey Global Institute report released on September 29, 2026, AI and automation could eliminate approximately 36 million US jobs by 2035, while economic growth would create approximately 41 million new positions, representing a net gain. About 25 million workers would retain occupations in their current field but with different responsibilities, while roughly 11 million people, or 6.5 to 7% of the workforce, would need to completely change careers. To absorb these shifts, the United States would need approximately 770,000 occupational transitions per year, compared to a historical average of 215,000, representing a pace 3.6 times higher than normal. Lower-wage workers and those without college degrees are the most vulnerable, while the strongest job growth is expected in healthcare, professional and technical services, and construction.
