McKinsey says AI could create more jobs than it destroys, but millions still face displacement

McKinsey Global Institute released a report estimating that human-AI collaboration could unlock up to $2.9 trillion in additional annual value by 2030. Approximately 57% of current US work hours have a theoretical automation potential, but this figure represents a ceiling rather than a forecast of actual job losses. In practice, AI-related workforce reductions reached 14%, well below the anticipated 32%, illustrating the gap between technical automation capability and economic incentive to implement it. Over 70% of skills currently sought by employers are applicable to both automatable and non-automatable tasks.
