Mexican authorities dismantled a massive cryptocurrency mining operation that was stealing electricity from infrastructure connected to the Nuevo Necaxa hydroelectric complex in the municipality of Tlaola, in the northern highlands of Puebla. Around 300 specialized computers along with transformers, medium-voltage equipment, and satellite antennas were seized during the raid. Investigators have not yet determined which cryptocurrencies were being mined, but they are exploring a possible link to money laundering. Malaysia lost approximately $1.11 billion to electricity theft linked to cryptocurrency mining between 2020 and August 2025, according to the Malaysian energy ministry.
