MapQuest, the online mapping service, has added a surveillance layer to its app showing the location of automatic license plate readers from Flock Safety, Motorola Solutions, Axon, Verkada and other manufacturers. Flock’s AI-powered cameras capture not only license plates but also the make, model, color and bumper stickers of vehicles, and can be networked across agencies for cross-border data sharing. Facing growing bipartisan backlash, Senator Bernie Sanders introduced the Ban Flock Act to prohibit federal agencies from using the technology, while Texas Governor Greg Abbott froze funding after revealing at least 30 million dollars had been allocated to the network.
