Lula urges Trump to resume US tariff negotiations in phone call

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva called US President Donald Trump to push for faster negotiations to reduce tariffs affecting Brazilian exporters. During this 40-minute conversation both sides described as productive, Lula thanked Trump for rolling back 40% supplemental tariffs on several agricultural products, bringing the rate down to 10%. Brazil, the world’s largest exporter of soybeans, coffee, and sugar, still faces that 10% tariff rate, which producers say remains harmful to their competitiveness. New 25% tariffs were introduced in July 2026 on many Brazilian imports, indicating the overall trajectory has been toward more friction rather than less.
