Ledger CEO Pascal Gauthier has argued that the cryptocurrency industry should stop treating security as a problem that can be solved by burdening users with more responsibilities. He emphasized that « total safety » does not exist and that hardware wallet manufacturers must design systems that remain safe even when users make mistakes. The Coldcard incident in July led to losses exceeding 1,000 BTC due to an entropy problem in seed generation, with 1,596 BTC stolen from 7,300 addresses according to Galaxy Research. The Trezor data breach on August 13 exposed data belonging to 13,689 customers in seven countries. Gauthier warned that self-custody will remain limited if ordinary users are expected to understand every technical failure mode.
