Lean Ethereum: The Most Ambitious Plan in Crypto, or the Last Chance Overhaul?

The Ethereum Foundation cut 54 positions, one-fifth of its workforce, before unveiling Lean Ethereum, a major overhaul aimed at radically simplifying the network by drastically reducing its code base. The initiative also addresses the quantum computing threat, with a Google paper co-signed by a Foundation researcher estimating that fewer than 500,000 qubits would suffice to break Ethereum’s cryptography, versus the previously estimated 9 million. Ether currently trades 60% below its summer 2025 peak, and validators could see their entry requirement drop from 32 ethers to just one. The Foundation aims to migrate its systems within three to four years, versus 2029 for Google.
