The labor force participation rate for Americans aged 55 and older fell to 36.9% in July, down from 37.1% in June, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. This rate has dropped more than three percentage points since the pre-pandemic period, when it stood above 40%. The overall participation rate reached 61.4% in July 2026, its lowest non-pandemic reading since 1976. The main driver of this decline is the massive retirement of baby boomers, born between 1946 and 1964.
