Investment firm Kimmeridge Energy Management Co. warns that nearly half of proposed US data centers are at risk of being delayed or scrapped. Between January 2024 and May 2026, at least 170 billion dollars worth of projects have already been delayed or cancelled due to community opposition. According to Kimmeridge, data centers could add between 5 and 10 billion cubic feet per day to US natural gas demand growth, which currently stands at roughly 30 Bcf/d. Over 500 US jurisdictions have already imposed restrictions on data center development, and approximately 70% of Americans oppose new data centers being built in their local areas.
