Justice John Bodurtha of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court ordered the return of a laptop containing a Bitcoin wallet to the family of William Sandeson. Prosecutors failed to prove that the cryptocurrency was used in the drug transaction, was proceeds of crime or was otherwise tainted by criminality. However, C$5,000 in cash seized from Sandeson’s apartment was ruled to be offence-related property and will not be returned. The wallet’s value has variously been estimated between C$8,000 and more than C$200,000. Sandeson is serving a life sentence for the murder of Taylor Samson and will be eligible for parole in 2030.
