John Collison, co-founder of Stripe, said the company now considers January 1, 2026, the official start of the singularity, citing rapid advances in artificial intelligence and a sharp rise in new company creation. This designation appeared in an investor letter sent by Stripe in August 2026, alongside the announcement of the acquisition of OpenRouter, an AI model routing platform, for more than $8 billion, mostly paid in stock. In the first half of 2026, Stripe reported revenue growth of 41% year-over-year and free cash flow up 43%. The Stripe Atlas 2026 cohort is currently generating five times the revenue of the 2025 cohort at the same point, and 88% of Forbes AI 50 companies build on Stripe’s platform.
