From January 2027, the Bank of Japan will increase its annual ETF sales from about 330 billion to 860 billion yen in book value. According to its estimates, the faster pace reduces the arithmetic time needed to dispose of its entire end-September 2026 holdings from 112 years to 43 years, without setting a completion deadline. Sales would remain limited to roughly 0.1% of market trading value to avoid disrupting Japanese markets. The bank ended its ETF purchases in March 2024 and retains the option to slow or suspend disposals. Bitcoin could be exposed if a stronger yen or higher borrowing costs led yen-funded investors to sell other assets to repay their debts.
