Japan plans $60B investment in data centers as it races to become global AI infrastructure leader

A Nikkei survey of 26 major Japanese data center operators reveals that 22 of them plan to more than quadruple AI-focused capacity by 2033. The total investment is estimated at roughly 10 trillion yen, approximately $60 billion, spread over eight years. Key contributors include NTT, targeting a total capacity of 2 gigawatts, Blackstone committing $30 billion, and Microsoft pledging $10 billion between 2026 and 2029. Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund Mubadala is reportedly considering a project worth approximately $6.3 billion in Akita Prefecture, with a target capacity of 500 megawatts that would make it one of the largest data centers in Asia.
