Quantitative trading firm Jane Street held a nearly $1 billion bitcoin position as of late July, equivalent to 15,394 BTC at current prices. Rather than holding digital coins directly, the exposure was routed through Bitcoin ETFs totaling $990 million, with the bulk invested in BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust ($828 million), alongside positions in Fidelity and Grayscale funds. Jane Street’s Bitcoin holdings align with a broader trend of major financial institutions and sovereign funds — including Edelman Financial, Tudor Investment, and Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth funds — disclosing significant BTC positions via regulated ETF vehicles. Despite the crypto exposure, Jane Street posted its first losing month in roughly a decade in July, with roughly $15 billion in losses, while generating over $40 billion in net trading revenue year-to-date.
