Israel extradited Alexander Block, formerly known as Alexander Gurevich, to the United States to face charges over the alleged theft of about $2.8 million from the Nomad crypto bridge in 2022. Block allegedly made six test transfers before carrying out four main transfers, then moved the tokens through several wallets and converted them into other cryptocurrencies to conceal their origin. His actions exposed a flaw in Nomad’s smart contracts, which other users then exploited to drain more than $186 million from a wallet controlled by the bridge operator. Israel’s Supreme Court rejected his appeal, ruling that exploiting a programming flaw can constitute unlawful computer intrusion even when the software technically permits the action. In December 2025, the Federal Trade Commission proposed a settlement with Nomad operator Illusory Systems requiring the company to return recovered funds to users who have not been reimbursed.
