Iranian lawmaker says US negotiations were authorized by Supreme Leader Khamenei

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei authorized his government’s negotiations with the United States. The confirmation follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump on June 17, 2026. Khamenei gave his blessing the following day, stating the move served Iran’s national interests without constituting capitulation. Up to 300 billion dollars in reconstruction funds are reportedly conditional on compliance with the agreement’s terms. Internal disagreements persist, particularly concerning the nuclear program and the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly a fifth of the world’s oil passes daily.
