IMF Now Says Donations Funded El Salvador’s Bitcoin Growth

The International Monetary Fund announced in a staff-level agreement that Bitcoin purchases made by El Salvador since mid-2025 came from private donations and not public funds. The country’s strategic Bitcoin reserve has grown from 5,968 BTC in December 2024 to 7,764 BTC currently, according to the National Bitcoin Office. The IMF plans to release approximately $140 million as part of a $1.4 billion Extended Fund Facility approved in February 2025, pending executive board approval. The state-owned Chivo wallet is now majority-controlled by a private operator, with El Salvador retaining a minority stake. The IMF projects 4.5% growth this year and aims to reduce public debt to 80% of GDP by 2030.
