President Donald Trump on Wednesday threatened to impose tariffs on the European Union or halt trade with the bloc entirely if it proceeds with its plan to make Canada its first-ever « associate member. » Trump called the proposal « laughable » and said Canada had been a « terrible trade partner. » The threat came after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the EU was opening the door for Canada to become its first associate member. Ottawa is seeking to diversify away from the United States following months of escalating trade tensions, as Trump has slapped a 50% tariff on Canadian goods. EU member states have yet to respond to Trump’s threat.
