Hoskinson says Vitalik’s AI warning could delay the internet’s quantum defenses

Charles Hoskinson, founder of Cardano, has responded to Vitalik Buterin’s warnings about AI risks to lattice-based cryptography, arguing that security parameters already account for decades of known attacks. Hoskinson warned that abandoning lattice-based systems could slow the adoption of quantum-resistant protections already being deployed across internet infrastructure. He rejected Buterin’s suggestion to multiply key sizes by ten, calling it numerology rather than a sound cryptographic approach. The US National Institute of Standards and Technology standardized ML-KEM for key encapsulation and ML-DSA for digital signatures in 2024, with security parameters designed to withstand known attack improvements.
