Afghan digital payments platform HesabPay has reached over one million users and wallets on the Algorand blockchain, growing from just a few thousand initial users. Founded in 2016 in Kabul by Sanzar Kakar, the platform offers peer-to-peer transfers, bill payments, and merchant transactions, with USSD access for feature phones and QR cards for low-literacy populations. It has facilitated aid distribution for over 625,000 UNHCR refugee returnees and 17,500 internally displaced persons, channeling more than $35 million in assistance across Afghanistan. The Algorand Foundation made a strategic investment in December 2023 to accelerate scaling, and the platform also works with the World Food Programme to expand operations in Afghanistan and Syria.
