Greek-operated air defense system shoots down missiles over Saudi Arabia, putting oil infrastructure risks back in focus

A Patriot battery operated by Greek military personnel intercepted two ballistic missiles fired from Yemen on July 25, targeting oil refineries in Yanbu on Saudi Arabia’s western coast. This was the second combat engagement this year for the Greek unit known as ELDYSA, with the first occurring on March 19, 2026. Approximately 130 Greek military personnel operate and maintain the Patriot PAC-3 battery in the kingdom since September 2021, under a bilateral agreement with Saudi Arabia. This arrangement reflects a growing trend of Western military capabilities being deployed to protect energy supply chains in the Middle East.
