Greece’s parliament approved a law imposing a 10% tax on realized net cryptocurrency capital gains from January 1, 2027. Annual net gains of €500 or less are exempt, while losses above that threshold can be carried forward for up to five years and offset only against future crypto capital gains. The levy applies to the difference between the acquisition price and the transfer price, rather than the full sale proceeds, with trading fees and other transaction costs potentially deductible. Crypto-to-crypto swaps are treated as non-taxable events, but using bitcoin to buy goods or services can trigger taxation. Implementation directives will set out transparency and audit requirements, while Greece’s rate sits below the 8% to 30% range found across several European Union countries.
